olivia-bernardo-head-shot Olivia Bernardo is a junior majoring in journalism and political science at the University of Miami. She wants to be a journalist to keep people informed and vows to always be completely honest with herself and her audience. Bernardo is interested in broadcast journalism as well as magazine writing and hopes to pursue a career after graduation in either of these two fields.

gabi Gabriela Campos was born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil. Her passion for writing started at an early age when she wrote short stories in elementary school. Currently a print journalism and international studies major at the University of Miami, Campos believes that journalism is essential to a well functioning, free society. She would like to follow a career in newspapers or news magazines. Campos’s dream job is to be a foreign correspondent, but for now she is happy to be working as an immigrant community beat reporter closer to home, in South Florida.

daniela Daniela Dello Joio is originally from New York but spent most of her childhood traveling throughout Europe with her family, who is in the equestrian show jumping business. When she was at the appropriate age for American middle school, her family moved to Palm Beach, Fla. She graduated from St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton in 2005 and lived in Florence, Italy, for one year before enrolling at the University of Miami, where she has written for the Miami Hurricane and Distraction Magazine. Dello Joio is graduating in May, after three years at UM, with a double major in print journalism and English literature.

corey Corey Erb is a junior at the University of Miami. He is double majoring in print journalism, with a concentration in visual journalism, and economics, and also has a minor in music business and entertainment industry. He has covered sports for the Miami Hurricane and The Miami Herald and written for Distraction magazine. Erb is the treasurer for Campus Crusade for Christ at UM. Upon graduation, he plans to work as a reporter for a newspaper, online publication or a music magazine.

taylor Taylor Longley is a senior at the University of Miami majoring in broadcast journalism and political science. Summer internships at TV stations in Orlando and Miami have reinforced her desire to work in the news media industry. She loves traveling, meeting new people and football season. Longley is looking forward to the professional adventure that will begin in May, after graduation.

josh Joshua W. Newman is a senior majoring in journalism and economics at the University of Miami. Over the past four years, he has taken advantage of UM’s resources and vastly developed his journalistic and new media reporting skills. He is the Web editor for the School’s only student-run magazine, Distraction. Distractionmagazine.com is currently under construction and will be launched by the end of the semester. Newman is also the opinion editor for The Miami Hurricane. With the persistent changes facing journalists today, he is excited to be a part of the solution.

jenny Jennifer Penichet transferred from the University of Florida to the University of Miami in 2007. Currently a senior, she is double majoring in print journalism and political science. Upon graduation, Penichet plans to go on to law school. Eventually, she would like to become an intellectual property attorney or an editor at a fashion magazine. She was born in Miami, Fla.

natalia Natalia Vanegas is a student with a double major in journalism and international studies at the University of Miami. She worked for two years as a traffic reporter for Telemundo 51, a local TV station in Miami, Fla. Natalia has developed an interest in convergence journalism and has experience in photography, video, and editing. She is a curious and a hard working person that has an incredible interest for visual communication and different cultures. Natalia is fluent in Spanish and English.

img_0686 Dena Giannini, a junior at the University of Miami, is majoring in visual journalism, with a focus on interactive media, and art. After spending a semester interning at Conde Nast’s TeenVogue in Manhattan, N.Y., Giannini realized that she would ultimately like to focus her career on bridging the gap between the realm of fashion-art and technology. She is vice president of IgKnite, the student organization of the Knight Center for International Media, which focuses its projects on the UN’s Millennium Development Goals. Giannini is also a writer and designer for Distraction Magazine, a Web editor for Distractionmagazine.com and an active member of the Delta Gamma Fraternity. Giannini continues to freelance as a wardrobe styling assistant for fashion publications, such as iD, Vogue, TeenVogue and Flair. In the spring 2009, she was selected to be part of the webcasting team for the annual Special Olympics event in Idaho.


brian Brian Schlansky is a junior new media designer for the Knight Center for International Media. He has worked on many projects including setting up servers and establishing procedures, coding the Web site for Gaby Bruna’s report from Haiti’s Central Plateau- explaining the UN’s Millennium Development Goals, and how Project Medishare is helping it achieve them. In September 2007, Schlansky was hired as the Webmaster for The Miami Hurricane student newspaper, which he completely rebuilt and redesigned with a more multimedia-centric version, built on the powerful WordPress platform. Schlansky wrote an in-depth account of the entire process on the College Media Innovation blog. He is serving as a Web consultant of MillenniumBeat.com.


andrea Andrea Ballocchi has studied video production at the Art Institute in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and has worked as an assistant producer for Sábado Gigantes on channel 13 in Santiago, Chile, and as a producer at Anticipa, an internet company, also in Chile. In 2005, she participated in the multimedia project “The Ancient Way,” in Spain. Since then she has participated in several other projects, including “Chasing Crusoe,” “Atacama Stories,” “Special Olympics Shanghai” and “South of Here.” She has also taught and coordinated projects at Universidad de los Andes, Chile. Ballocchi is currently a journalism graduate student at the University of Miami. She is a Flash programmer for MillenniumBeat.com.
